Four years.

It had been four years since Romeo met Juliet Capulet, and here he was. Still alive, still much more well than he deserved. The girl who had been his wife was fading in his memory, and he wished some part of him didn't see that as a good thing.

He didn't often go to Mass in Japan, but if there were ever a reason for it, this anniversary would serve. The ancient words, the rhythm of it, the incense -- all of it comforted him.

On his way out, he lit two candles: one for Juliet, one for Mercutio.

He hoped somewhere, they had forgiven him.

[OOC: NFB due to distance. Open after he leaves the chapel for phone calls, the girlfriend, etc., if you're willing to deal with a Shakespearean in mourning.]

Yurika was waiting outside the church, having taken a rare day off to accompany him at least as far as the doors.

She was an odd figure for a summer afternoon, leaning against the side of the church in her smart, dark suit and sunglasses, but she'd been content to wait out here until he was finished, however long it took.

"It's something you have to do, ne?" she stated, giving a negligent shrug. "I don't mind waiting, aijin, not when it's so nice outside."

"I'm here because it doesn't matter how much company you are, but that you need company," Yurika replied, giving him a faint smile. "If you want lunch, we'll get lunch. If you want to take a train to the coast...we need to get lunch first."

"Ah, but maybe this year I'll get you tipsy enough to hear a Mercutio story that you haven't told me before," she pointed out, altering their route by a few steps to point them in the right direction of one of the local bistros.

"...I know. But you have to forgive yourself eventually, aijin. You know that."

"The best always implicate you, and usually poor Benvolio as well," she replied lightly. She didn't understand Catholic guilt, even after all these years, not really. But she did know that Romeo would stop talking about it if she pushed too hard. He would talk it out as he was ready.

"Ai-ya, eighteen. That feels like forever ago, doesn't it?"

"I don't know what kind of husband you would have made then," she admitted, accepting his hand with a little squeeze. "Everything was different."

"But you would have been the best Romeo that you could be, ne? And that's a pretty good thing to be."

"Someday will come when someday will come, and it's no use fretting about someday today," Dōjima replied in that cheerfully practical manner of hers, but she let go of his hand long enough to spin around and bow at the church before they left the grounds completely.

She may not have been raised religiously, but like most Japanese she did still respect the dead, and some forms were to be observed.

"Today, we will go to the beach," she said, taking his arm again. "I have sparklers in my purse to use as an offering, since incense is boring, and we can get a room at an inn and drink wine until late."

"Is that your poetic soul speaking, or your thirst?" Dōjima laughed.
